Ryan Ruelas, who represents Trustee Area 5 on the Anaheim Elementary School District, posted this on his Facebook page earlier this summer:
“I’m a union guy through and through. I’m personally a proud member of a union (go CTA!!) and the work I have done as a trustee for AESD these last few years has clearly illustrated my support for unions.”
It certainly has. The California Teachers Union is one of the most powerful special interests in state politics, and Ruelas is a member of its State Council. He opposes reforming teacher tenure, which makes protects poor performing teachers who are phoning it in at the expense of their students.
Stopping the growth of charter schools is a top teacher union priority and Ruelas is a loyal soldier in that war. Ruelas voted to spend $1 million in school district funds suing a group of poor and working class immigrant parents trying to convert Palm Lane Elementary into a charter school.
Ruelas is certainly there for union interests. Parents – not so much.
In fact, this weekend Ruelas is in Los Angeles at the Westin Bonaventure representing the Anaheim Secondary Teachers Association (ASTA) at the CTA State Council.
Ruelas is running for re-election and his opponent is Shaun Dove, a parent and retired law enforcement officer. Dove supports charter schools and maximizing parental choice, and empowering district teachers. Shaun was a leader of the online petition to clear the Santa Ana River Trail homeless encampment – which quickly garnered 15,000 signatures and sparked the County and the city to begin the process of reclaiming the SART from the hundreds of transients living there.
Among those endorsing Dove are Anaheim City Councilman Steve Faessel and OC Board of Education Trustee Ken Williams.
