OC Democrats Stop Short Of Endorsing “Abolish ICE” Movement…For Now

Last week, a group of left-wing open borders activists mounted another attempt to have the Democratic Party of Orange County to adopt a resolution to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, commonly known as ICE:

DPOC leaders, concerned about how endorsing such a radical and unpopular stance would undermine the re-election efforts of freshman Representatives Gil Cisneros, Harley Rouda and Katie Porter, had successfully bottled up previous attempts to bring the resolution to a vote. According the OC Register, the principal sponsor of the resolution, DPOC Vice Chair Victor Valladares, ultimately reneged on an executive board decision to put the resolution on ice (so to speak):

On Feb. 11, a majority of the executive board of the Democratic Party of Orange County passed a resolution calling for the abolishment of ICE, as the immigration agency is commonly known. By the next day, some were urging the board to revisit the matter.

Ten days later, members met via conference call to discuss one issue: the resolution. The board then agreed to indefinitely table the matter.

“There was the fear this would be used as a weaponized tool by Republicans that we’re for open borders, (which the party does not support,)” said Valladares, the West vice-chair of the county’s party.

“So we did like a backroom deal to not talk about it,” he said. “I brought it back because it was killing me inside.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) was particularly worried, and as a result of his insistence on pushing the resolution, cut Valladares loose from his position as a DCCC field organizer in Rep. Harley Rouda’s district.

According to the OC Register, DPOC Chair Ada Briceno cautioned Central Committee members that although Democrats recently overtook Republicans in county-wide registration, they held no such advantage in the 48th, 45th  and 39th Congressional Districts:

“Don’t clap,” she said. “I want to tell you that (this advantage is) not in Harley’s district. I want to tell you that it’s not in Katie’s district. In fact, I want to tell you that it’s not in Gil’s area.

“Our four Congressional candidates are in deep trouble,” Briceno said of the incumbents, all of whom are facing potentially strong challengers in 2020.

The resolution to abolish ICE was put to a vote and failed. Councilman Jose F. Moreno, an ardent practitioner of identity politics and vocal critic of immigration law enforcement, chose to attend an academic function at Cal State Long Beach instead of the DPOC meeting. His alternate, Anaheim Union High School District Trustee Al Jabbar, voted in favor of abolishing ICE.

Ultimately, a modified version was adopted advocating the “reform” of ICE with the promise to consider support for getting rid of ICE altogether if the agency doesn’t cease its “atrocities.”

One of the lead Abolish ICE proponents, progressive activist Carlos Perea, lamented the outcome on Facebook:

“Last night, undocumented folks, immigrant rights advocates and allies showed up in force to tell the Democratic Party of Orange County to stand with immigrant communities and pass an #AbolishICE resolution.

After hours of debate, amendments and votes, the party voted on a watered down resolution to reform ICE.

This was a test of whether or not the party has the courage and can make a commitment in value to call on the abolishing of the agency that has separated and terrorized our families. Words matter and actions speak louder.

Delegates of the party were more concerned with their blue wave and not losing votes to keep moderate elects in power.”

Perea and his Abolish ICE confederates long ago cease drawing any distinction between legal and illegal immigration – because they do not recognize such a distinction as legitimate.

Tensions from the DPOC meeting lingered into the party’s annual Truman Dinner fundraiser a few days later.  The more left-wing activists and politicos sported “Abolish ICE” buttons…

…including Councilman Moreno:

The next day on Facebook, Moreno bizarrely tried to somehow tie in “the button wearers and those disturbed by them” with this 1966 Martin Luther King, Jr. interview about rioting v. non-violence, during which King problematically dignified rioting “as the language of the unheard”:

Moreno wears the Abolish ICE button, but manages to miss DPOC meetings when the Abolish ICE resolution is on the line. It’s reminiscent of how Moreno’s 2016 campaign fire-breathing about the anti-campaign ordinance and making Anaheim a Sanctuary City evaporated following his election to City Council.

Will he bring his support for abolishing ICE to the City Council in the form of a resolution? Moreno’s stated reasons for sponsoring a council resolution opposing the new “public charge” rule would also apply to sponsoring a council resolution to abolish ICE. Wearing a button is one thing – will Moreno practice some praxis by translating rhetorical support for abolishing ICE into concrete action? After all:

  1. Three of four vice chairs of the DPOC are in this photo on abolishing ICE. Ada ought to just resign. Victor is on trial for child abuse. Bettie is running for city council. Jeff should have been kicked out years ago. Emma Jenson posed in her bra and panties in as Instagram post for Bernie. Joe McLaughlin was removed from a position with Democrats of Greater Irvine. Jose supports the Abolish ICE effort but doesn’t show up to vote. Pathetic

  2. Victor’s charges are very serious. His children (for their safety) have been kept from him for almost a year. His ex is quite scared of his violence and threats to “cut her throat” so she can’t tell anyone it was him. Terrifying.

  3. I actually give Victor credit. He pushed ahead for what he believes in even though it got him fired from a really good paying job in the party. That actually says something good about him.

    • It was t a good paying job. If it was, he wouldn’t be living with his mother and his child support would be paid up

  4. Here is my take, Victor can be excused for his ignorance as he barely has a High School diploma, but the others can not. The FACT is: ICE is a 6 BILLION DOLLAR department of the federal government. Immigration enforcement is buy one of many things they are responsible for.

I suppose, when confronted none of those photographed would publicly support sex-trafficking, human smuggling, drug smuggling, prescription drug counterfeiting, prohibiting DEADLY chemicals in our food chain (Operation Guardian), operation Cornerstone, (which was specifically designed to protect immigrants from pay schemes)? Maybe they would be interested in the facet of the department that protects American workers (immigrants included) rights? Who knows?

As educators, I would think Dr. Moreno and company would value the long standing international student exchange program which is overseen by ICE.

In short, this was a stunt by Victor, to get attention. It is beyond me why an unemployed 35 year old man who lives with his Mother and is facing child endangerment charges, and is currently on probation in Orange County would put himself out there. If I were him, I would be working on the aforementioned things and not ABOLISHING a government department that serves a vital purpose.

What about the IPR, the intellectual property rights Center?

  5. Ada nominating him for vice chair Let’s question her judgement

  6. I understand Victor was arraigned this AM on Child Abuse charges and presented a letter from Dr. Moreno as a reference as to why he should not be remanded. So this is NOT the first time that Moreno has defended an accussed batterer in court.

How in the world can this guy expect not to be called a hypocrite. Also, look for Gina Clayton Tarvin to speak out in favor of Moreno’s left flank of Correa and his ABOLISH ICE position on the radical online radio show ITZ Happening. I’ll reserve comment on the fine character and oral skills of the guys running this broadcast.

I am told a VV supporter got into a beef with another attendee. Way to lay Low Vic!

  7. Who’s paying Victor’s bail? It’s due tomorrow

    • Charter School Chris

You can bet it won’t be Vern or Greg! But, I am given to understand a certain teachers union is paying Victor to sabatoge his neighborhoods charter school (keep in ming his neighborhood school Oakview is among the lowest performing schools in the state, yet he thinks parents should keep their kids there!).

So teachers are now OK with accussed child abusers?

  8. Victor is as dirty as it gets. Moreno knows it. All of his supporters know it. Will be interesting to see if they scatter if Victor is found guilty, as most think he will be.
