Overlooked in the typically one-dimensional media coverage of Anaheim campaigns is the dynamic of Democratic interest groups spending tens of thousands of dollars harshly attacking Democrat candidates for Anaheim mayor and city council.
The Democratic Party of Orange County has endorsed Ashleigh Aitken for mayor and Councilman Jose F. Moreno for re-election. The Orange County Employees Association – a de facto arm of the Democratic Party – has also endorsed Aitken and Moreno.
The OCEA has funneled at least $30,000 into mailers attacking Democratic former Councilmember Lorri Galloway. The DPOC has piled, as well – using $10,000 from the union-sponsored Yes on Measure L campaign to attack Galloway. Far be it from a veteran Democrat former elected official with name ID to compete with a first-time candidate.
The OCEA is also attacking Mitch Caldwell in District 3. Caldwell is a bona fide union Democrat, a self-made success story who hasn’t forgotten his blue-collar roots and believes in paying his workers a good wage. He also understands economic growth is a necessary pre-condition for economic opportunity – which benefits everyone. Unfortunately, the OCEA prefers the incumbent – left-wing, tenured Chicano Studies professors with a stunted understanding of economics who only became a Democrat before running for Anaheim City Council.
Compounding the weirdness, there’s the spectacle of a Democrat special interest group – the OCEA – spending large sums of money in support of two Republican candidates: Cynthia Ward for mayor and Robert Nelson for city council.
