The Orange County Employees Association (OCEA) has paid for another negative mailer attacking former Anaheim City Councilman Harry Sidhu, a Republican businessman and mayoral front-runner.
In August, the powerful public employee union dumped $100,000 into an independent expenditure committee called the California Taxpayer Protection Committee. It has been using that committee as a vehicle to attack pro-business candidates in Anaheim in hopes of boosting its endorsed candidates – progressive Democrats Ashleigh Aitken for mayor and Councilman Jose F. Moreno in District 3. The OCEA-funded mailers attack Sidhu and District 3 candidate Mitch Caldwell and promote Cynthia Ward for mayor and Robert Nelson in District 3. The latter two are essentially spoilers, and the OCEA’s intent appears to be knocking votes loose from Sidhu and Caldwell in order to benefit Aitken and Moreno.
This latest IE spent $10,570 on a mailer opposing Sidhu.
As noted in previous posts, the effectiveness of the OCEA effort is open to question. The union spent a combined $600,000 in 2010 and 2012 on a failed effort to elect John Leos to the Anaheim City Council, and the OCEA’s track record in Orange County races is not a very good one.
