UPDATE – September 14, 2018: District staff pulled the item pertaining to contracting with Cynthia Liu and the K-12 News Network from the agenda before AUSHD Board meeting began.
The politicization of the Anaheim Union High School District continues apace, as the AUSHD Board tonight will consider using public funds to contracts with a stridently progressive “student news” outfit as a social media consultant.
Item 11.16 is a $20,000 “educational services” contract with Cynthia Liu and her “K-12 News Network” to “assist the district in the development of a comprehensive social media strategy” to “incorporate new groups” with district communications strategies. The staff report describes Liu’s K-12 News Network as “a grassroots education news and civic engagement business” – a description that makes euphemism seem euphemistic.
A quick glance at its Facebook page makes it screamingly clear what the K-12 News Network does is engaged in strident progressive political advocacy.
Here’s an anti-Judge Kavanaugh post from this morning:
Here’s a post from two hours ago endorsing a slate of candidates in the New York state elections:
Can we expect a similar post urging AUHSD voters to support candidates who “champion public education” – i.e. Board President Al Jabbar and his endorsed candidates?
Here’s a K-12 News Network post from last year, trumpeting democratic socialist Bernie Sanders endorsement of teachers union candidate Steve Zimmer for the LAUSD Board of Education:
Anti-charter school propaganda is a staple the K-12 News Network’s social media. Here’s one from yesterday, regurgitating the standard teachers union narrative about evil “corporate charters schools”:
It goes on like this in post after post on K12 News Network social media – one stridently leftist message after another, a nonstop spasm of progressive groupthink.
It’s more of the same on owner Cynthia Liu’s own Facebook page. Here’s one of a number of anti-charter school posts:
Note the hashtag #CharterSchoolsAreNotPublicSchos. At least they teach correct spelling at charter schools.
Here’s one from last week complaining how the State and county boards of education can hear appeals from charter school applications who have been denied by (primarily) union-dominated local school boards:
Liu’s progressive crusade against Judge Brett Kavanaugh isn’t confined to K-12 News Network social media. Here, Liu not only opposes his SCOTUS nomination, but calls for his impeachment from the bench:
Here’s one from June 2018 supporting the abolition of ICE:
Here, Liu gushes about wanting to make Colin Kaepernick the King of America:
Here’s a petty, incomprehensible rant about “white supremacy,” cultural appropriation and other SJW buzzwords:
There are innumerable reputable social media consultants out there, and AUSHD Mike Matsuda selects a hyper-political activist who shares his progressive political agenda – including making AUSHD hround zero for anti-charter school “resistance” in Orange County. Given Matsuda’s track record of infusing his progressive politics into the AUSHD bloodstream, only a fool could believe the aggressively left-wing politics of Liu and her K-12 News Network will be firewalled from the impressionable students in their charge.
If the AUSHD Board has any sense or independence, they’d reject this contract and direct their superintendent to issue a competitive RFP, with publicly stated criterion, for a professional social media firm. But this is a situation in which the tail wags the dog, so expect the AUHSD Board to dutifully rubber stamp Mastuda’s choice.
The Board meeting is this evening at 6:00 p.m. at district headquarters, 501 N. Crescent Way in Anaheim. You’ll have to attend in person if you want to see and hear staff present this item and listen to any Board member question – in case they actually have any. You won’t the option of watching streaming video of the Board meeting since AUHSD is very untransparent and opposed to civic engagement when it comes to making Board deliberations accessible to the public. Mastuda will hand out a $20,000 contract to a political crony, but the district can’t spend some spare change putting an iPhone on a tripod and broadcasting the meeting on FacebookLive.
