Recall Brewing Against Sen. Josh Newman Over Gas Tax Hike Vote

josh newman AB featA recall is brewing against freshman state Senator Josh Newman over his vote in favor of a massive tax increase pushed by Governor Jerry Brown and the liberal Democratic leadership of the state legislature.  The package of gas tax and vehicle license tax increase – which have no expiration date – are projected to cost taxpayers more than $50 billion during the next 10 years.

San Diego talk radio host and former SD City Councilman Carl DeMaio is spearheading the effort and says there is interest from various political players and grassroots organizations. Newman is being targeted in part because of the narrowness of his victory in the 29th Senate District last year – beating Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang by 2,498 votes – the beneficiary of extraordinary Democratic turnout. SD29 includes the Anaheim flatlands.

The tax hike package passed with the bare two-thirds majority necessary in both the Senate and the Assembly; if any one of those legislators had voted “no” the tax hike package would have failed.

Newman is the author of the accompanying SCA 2, a state constitutional amendment that will be on the 2018 ballot and purports to guarantee all revenues raised by the tax package will only be used for transportation purposes. Critics point out that legislature has always found ways around past ballot measures that did the same thing.

Recalls are easier said than done, but Newman is a logical target – a newly-elected Democrat from a swing-district in an era of massive voter dissatisfaction.

  1. We need to do this in N. orange county, RECALL. Tom Daly voted for it and he must think our roads are filled with pot holes and causing mass damage to vehicles everywhere. WRONG- Orange County has some of the best roads anywhere and the roads are always being repaired. Daly has just voted party line favorite to stay in good company with his cohorts. He cares less about the voters and more about his friends in Sacramento. The vote that pushed this in was over a couple hundred thousand dollar work project in central California. How many other people out there feel this way? Be aware the gas tax included a “loophole” so the state can use the tax for spending in the general fund. Read it correctly folks the middle class is going to be taxed the most with prices on every thing rising accordingly.

  2. I am furious over this political trickery! DO NOT BE FOOLED.. this recall of Newman has NOTHING to do with the gax tax vote. This is Republicans trying to break the Democratic supermajority in the state senate. Citizens are (again) being fooled by paid petitioners gathering signatures on FALSE PRETENSE. The senate voted to pass the gas tax, not Newman alone, and it won’t be reversed by a recall. My blood is boiling over the tens of thousands of dollars to be wasted on this political trickery that could otherwise go to repairing roads directly. It’s disgusting.

    • The following bills will be passed unless we RECALL JOSH NEWMAN:

SB 640 – sales tax on services – $123 billion
SB 421 – allow counties to collect car taxes too – $8 billion
      SB 726 – death tax – $4.5 billion
SB 567 – four income tax increases – $3.5 billion

Then there is the est. $200 billion in new taxes if they pass single payer healthcare.

Cali already soaks us for $180 billion a year, ENOUGH is ENOUGH

  3. SIGN THE RECALL JOSH NEWMAN PETITION

  4. SIGN THE PETITION TO STOP THE GAS TAX HIKE. Look at what the money can go for and how they can use the funds. Look into how the vote was taken and who changed their minds to vote for this tax and why they changed their mind. How many times have we had funds to fix the roads and it was not done. Now look into the”dire” shape the roads are in and we will be taxed again? Where is our hard earned money going?

  5. Research how much will be made by the taxes and that there is not time limit on this tax. It is not just the gas tax, what about the car tax? Why were we not allowed to vote on it? I will tell you why, it would not have passed.

  6. The lady who runs the DPOC made a robo call today, decrying the “out of town agitators” collecting sigs.

A little ironic, considering the Palm Lane union slugs, Ada and her hired guns in Anaheim as well as Julio “I grew up in Anaheim, but carpetbag in Santa Ana” Perez infiltrating the welcoming committee.

To be sure. The line was Three deep at Brea Home Depot, a nice crowd at Stadium Tavern/ DTF.

Good for the PEOPLE for exercising their right.

    Josh Newman is a puppet.

  7. The only political trickery is the way this Gas Tax was passed.

  8. IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO SIGN THIS GAS TAX PETITION and remove Josh Newman. PLEASE do an article and expose it for what it is and means. We will pay more per gallon of gas and more for our car registration with no end in sight. Look into all the facts and how is can be used if they “need the money”.

  9. Tax Payer vs Tax Takers….. I wonder which one Ms. Lawson is…?
