UNITE-HERE Rumbling About Change in Honda Center Food Operations

Unite Here protestorsAnaheim Arena Management — which operates the Honda Center for the City of Anaheim — is taking over the food concession from Aramark. That has UNITE-HERE Local 11 worried.

From the union’s website:

Anaheim Arena Management, the company that owns the Honda Center and the Anaheim Ducks,  plans to take over the operation of the stadium’s food concessions from Aramark. But they haven’t assured the Honda Center workers that they will be able to keep their jobs.

The Honda Center employees work hard, and our jobs help us provide our families with stability in a tough economy. You can help by sending a message to the owners of the Ducks that you support the workers.

I suppose that’s one way to look at it.

My guess is what really worries UNITE-HERE Local 11 is that Honda Center food concessions workers will be offered jobs — but not as unionized members of Local 11. In that case, the union’s concern wouldn’t be the loss of jobs for its members, but the loss of those workers as members (and their dues money).

Also, UNITE-HERE Local 11 incorrectly states Anaheim Arena Management (AAM) owns the Honda Center. It does not. The City of Anaheim owns the arena. AAM operates the Honda Center for the city, and billionaire Henry Samueli owns AAM, in addition to the Anaheim Ducks hockey team. One would expect the union representing Honda Center food workers to know who owns the arena in which its members work.
